What is it?
Goji berry also known as wolfberry is a tiny red fruit obtained from the plant vine Lycium barbarum which grows in China, Tibet and some parts of Asia. They belong to family Solanaceae. The berries grow on woody plants that grow between three and twelve feet tall. Goji berries are oblong-shaped, bright red in color and contain 20-40 tiny seeds. The berries ripen from July to October.
What is so good about it?
The goji berry has a pleasant and unique taste and is described as having a sweet, sour taste with earthy undertones. Many liken the flavor to that of a cross between cranberry and strawberry. It blends really well with vegetable juices.
How to use it
Goji berries can be consumed dried, fresh or frozen. In China, dried wolfberries are often added to rice porridge and almond jelly. Goji berries are also commonly used in Chinese tonic soups, in combination with chicken or pork, vegetables. Goji berries are the perfect addition to smoothies, vegetable juices , yogurts, cereals or salad dressings. Goji berries also can be used in juices, nectars, smoothies, wine, coffee and tea. It blends well with most fruits especially melon, strawberry and citrus aside from all vegetable juices.
